Why can't I see the text before I type it?
That is the point of dictation practice. Seeing the text first would only test copying, not listening comprehension and spelling.
What do the red letters mean?
A letter turns red when it does not match what the system expects. The live guide can resynchronise after a single missing or extra character, so one typo does not automatically make the rest of the sentence look wrong.
What is the listening focus?
Every exercise quietly targets one real listening difficulty, such as connected speech, weak forms, contractions or final sounds. You only see the listening focus after checking your answer, so it does not give the sentence away.
Does a spelling mistake lower my listening score?
Not when HearWriteEnglish can confidently recognise it as spelling or typing rather than listening. Capitalisation and punctuation are ignored, and high-confidence typos, common homophones and US/UK spelling variants are shown separately. Missing words or genuinely different words affect your listening score.
Can I practise American and British English?
Yes. Choose US or UK pronunciation before you press play. HearWriteEnglish keeps your choice on this device, and you can switch accents at any time during normal practice.
Will HearWriteEnglish remember where I stopped?
Yes. Your completed-sentence progress is saved locally in this browser for each CEFR level, so you can continue later without creating an account. You can restart any level whenever you want.
